Tallis Festival

Since 1990, Exmoor Singers has hosted the Tallis Festival when the group is joined for a weekend of intensive rehearsal by around 100 singers to form the Tallis Festival Choir culminating in a high-quality public performance on the Sunday evening.

Tallis Festival weekends usually include Thomas Tallis’s 40-part motet, Spem in alium nunquam habui and a large-scale choral work often with orchestra, for example: Monteverdi Vespers, Bach Magnificat, Tippett A Child of Our Time.

The 2006 Festival included a new 40-part work, Tentatio, by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, commissioned especially for the Festival, and intended as companion piece to Spem in alium. This was the first Festival commission, and was repeated very successfully at the 2014 Festival. In 2007, the second 40-part Festival commission, Love You Big as the Sky by Manchester-based composer Peter McGarr was performed, and in 2010 a third 40-part commission, Visitations by American composer James Lavino received its premiere.

Tallis Festival 2017 “Let all the world in every corner sing” will take place from 29 September, with the closing concert on Sunday 1 October 2017. The programme includes: Tallis Spem in alium nunquam habui, Vaughan Williams Mass in G minor for double choir and MacMillan Miserere. Full details and application form.
