BBC Electric Proms with BLOC PARTY

The BBC initiated the Electric Proms in 2006 with the aim of giving new and established musicians the freedom to create unique performances. East London art-rockers Bloc Party were booked to do a live concert at the Camden Roundhouse for the Electric Proms 2007 and the BBC approached Exmoor Singers with a proposal to collaborate with the band. What might have been some fairly low-key backing vocals proved to be much more than that owing to how lead singer Kele Okereke wanted to use this opportunity. Kele had highly-detailed choral ideas for most of the numbers in the set, including one completely a cappella number. The choir introduced Kele to gifted composer/arranger Avshalom Caspi with whom Exmoor Singers had previously worked on a soundtrack for a documentary on the Crusades. Avshalom then worked around the clock to bring Kele's ideas to life and create unique choral arrangements of a number of Bloc Party songs for the band and the choir to perform together. The resulting concert in front of an audience of 3,000 was broadcast on BBC2 television and BBC Radio 1, and the choir performed with the band for 12 of 14 numbers in the set.
