About Us

Exmoor Singers on a beach

Since 1982 Exmoor Singers has developed from an Imperial College student choir to its current position as one of London’s best amateur chamber choirs. The group is still based at Imperial and performs the widest possible range of chamber choir repertoire.

Performances range from intimate a cappella programmes through masterpieces with period instruments, such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Handel’s Messiah, to the Tallis Festival featuring large-scale works. Performances in London have included concerts at St John’s, Smith Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the National Portrait Gallery. Outside London the choir regularly performs at Aldeburgh Parish Church, and has also given concerts in King’s College, Cambridge and at the Cheltenham Festival.

As well as promoting single concerts, Exmoor Singers has developed a number of longer-term projects:

Tallis Festival

An annual event where Exmoor Singers is joined by around 100 fellow-singers from the UK and beyond to rehearse and perform a concert in a weekend. Thomas Tallis’s 40-part motet, Spem in alium, is always on the programme, and the Festival has also given Exmoor Singers the opportunity to commission new 40-part works. More information about the Tallis Festival.

Sounds: voices of our time

Inaugurated in 2001 to promote the music of living composers through dedicated concerts, recordings and new commissions. The first such concert was given in 2002 and the sixth concert in the series is being planned for 2015. More information about Sounds.

Echoes: spirit of place and time

By contrast, this strand presents music of the past in an appropriate historical context – giving both choir and audience the opportunity to get a feel for where, and when, the music belongs. More information about Echoes.

Other activities

Exmoor Singers also participates in events organised by others, from concert series at Aldeburgh Parish Church or the National Portrait Gallery, charity events and weddings, to media and recording projects, such as Songs of Praise. More information about Recordings and media.
